As the fight against Covid-19 gets more intense, local fashion designers are stepping in, lending a hand to medical front liners to stay safe while carrying out their noble duties. Malaysian Official Designers Association (MODA) together with FashionValet and the Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (Imaret) come out with the initiative to supply personal protection equipment (PPE) for the local medical staff.
Gathering many of the prominent names in the local fashion scene including Melinda Looi, Khoon Hooi, Key Ng, Alia Bastamam and Celeste Thoi, just to name a few, as well as their teams of seamstresses, the dressmakers are busy working from home producing the much needed PPE gowns. According to MODA’s spokesman, the alliance will be providing materials for the clothiers to work on while FashionValet and Imaret are playing their parts in fundraising and distributing the supplies to their network of hospitals.
Calling the nation to unite in combating the disease, MODA is asking public donations to help fund the purchase of fabric to make the gowns, as well as other essentials required for the health professionals such as latex gloves and shoe covers. “To be frank, the situation is unprecedented and we are still in the process of making sense of it all, but we need to all move forward every day, every week, one step at a time and togetherness is the key,” said MODA executive advisor, Dirk Luebbert in an official statement.
