Cristobal Balenciaga, The New Look and the list goes on.
This year is definitely a blessed year for fashion enthusiasts. Earlier this year, Disney+ launched Cristobal Balenciaga, where we got to feast our eyes on some of the most iconic designs of the Spanish visionary. But that was not the only designer that got a feature from television networks and streaming services like Apple TV+, Hulu and HBO Max. Here, our guide to the best fashion series and documentaries to satiate your fashion history cravings in 2024.
Cristobal Balenciaga
The latest fashion mini series is a dream come true for both Cristobal Balenciaga fans and fashion enthuasiats. From the iconic rose dress made of crumpled black gazar to the reinterpretation of 1958 peacock dress, the iconic creations of the Spanish designer, that go against the grain, all come to life in the new Disney+ production thanks to the magical touch of costume designer Bina Diageler.
The New Look
Treat this 10-episode series more as historical drama than a fashion series. Produced by Apple TV+ and written by Todd A. Kessler, the drama stars Ben Mendelsohn and Juliette Binoche, chronicling the pivotal moments of the designers behind two of the biggest couture houses in the world — Christian Dior and Coco Chanel. Inspired by true events taking place during the World War II, the docu-series unearths everything from the untold story of Coco Chanel, the rise of Monsieur Dior and the redemption of resistance fighter.
Becoming Karl Lagerfeld
Five years on, after the passing of Karl Lagerfeld, the fascination of the legendary designer still lives on with the public — the latest production by Hulu bears witness to the great affection. With Spanish-German actor Daniel Brühl playing the German designer, the man who steered the ship of Chanel and Fendi, the six-part show lays bare the trials and tribulations of the celebrated designer — from luxury decadence and magnificent friendships, to intense rivalries and tragic love affairs. With the fashion hagiography, expect a grand-scale production that is packed with over 40 film sets and a total of 3,000 costumes created by award-winning costume designer Pascaline Chavanne.
High & Low: John Galliano
Still lingering over the fashion extravaganza served up by John Galliano that was staged under the Pont Alexandre III bridge in Paris? Here’s your chance to take a closer look at the world of John Galliano because Mubi is launching a documentary titled High & Low: John Galliano that homes in on the enfant terrible. Directed by Kevin Macdonald, the documentary takes a trip down the momery lane, revisiting some of his most iconic collections full of theatrical designs, elaborate headpieces and dramatic makeup looks — and, of course, his “outrageous” moments that were talk of the world, all unfolding before our eyes.
The Hype Season 2
The Hype is the streetwear’s answer to Project Runway and Making The Cut. Produced by HBO Max, the streetwear design competition features 12 up-and-coming streetwear designers, facing off against each other to bring home a total of $150,000 through fashion design challenges. Over the course of eight episodes, the designers’ creative acumen and business expertise are put to the test, all while being judged by rapper Offset, celebrity stylist Marni Senofonte and creative director Bephie Birkett.
