Louis Vuitton’s Vessel of Victory: The Trophy Trunk

Louis Vuitton’s Trophy Trunk provided a fitting end to a cathartic day at the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix.

There was overwhelming relief all round when the 2024 Formula One Monaco Grand Prix concluded last Sunday. For some, it meant the end of what had been a drama-fraught, processional race; for those of a Scuderia Ferrari, Charles Leclerc, or Monegasque inclination, a drought had ended. Leclerc’s victory on the storied streets of Monte Carlo meant that a Monegasque driver had won the legendary Grand Prix for the first time since Louis Chiron’s win 93 years ago and, on a more personal level for the Ferrari pilot, was the first taste of victory in his home race, having been blighted by bad luck in the years prior.

Monaco has always been known as a historic circuit and wins here often mean more, as the outpouring of emotion at the chequered flag on Sunday showed. The feats of serial winners such as Graham Hill and Ayrton Senna on the narrow, tricky street circuit are enshrined in motorsport lore, and modern iterations of the race are pulsating fusions of glamour, engineering and sheer skill. It comes as no surprise, then, that Louis Vuitton was chosen to be the maison that supplied the trophy trunk for such an event — their craftsmanship and appreciation of the finer details need no introduction and are an embodiment of what it takes to succeed in Monte Carlo.

2024 marked the fourth year running that Louis Vuitton has presented the trophy trunk for the Monaco Grand Prix winner’s trophy — another landmark for the maison’s affiliation with the pinnacle of the world’s various sports. Having supplied its iconic trophy trunk as a vessel of some of the world’s most iconic sporting silverware, such as football’s FIFA World Cup Trophy, NBA’s Larry O’Brien Trophy, tennis’ La Coupe des Mousquetaires, and the upcoming Paris Olympics, this affiliation with the Monaco Grand Prix reaffirms the maison’s dedication to fine craft: both in the world of trunk-making and in sport. The trunk is finished in navy leather, with the maison’s iconic motif presented in a deep racing scarlet and the Monegasque flag arranged in a ‘V’ (for victory) across the face of the trunk. Gold hardware further adds to the sense of prestige and matches the golden hue of the coveted trophy it bears within.

As Monaco erupted in red and white — the principality’s state colours, and coincidentally, the colours of Scuderia Ferrari — Louis Vuitton’s red-and-white accented trophy trunk proved to be a fitting final touch on a cathartic day of celebration for Monegasque motorsport.
