As we ring in 2025, we also welcome a new zodiac year in the Chinese calendar — the Year of the Wood Snake, which according to ancient almanacs will be blessed with the serpent’s wisdom, intuition and creativity. While shrouded in myth and mystery, and eliciting fear and fascination, snakes have often been associated with transformation and rebirth in Chinese horoscopes because of their ability to shed their old skin and renew themselves.
To celebrate the Year of the Snake, Johnnie Walker presents the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Lunar New Year Limited Edition. In honour of the serpent, the Scotch whisky maker has collaborated with Taiwainese-American visual artist James Jean to dream up a striking packaging that commands a double take. One of the most critically acclaimed artists of his generation, James Jean made a name for himself with his Japanese woodblock prints and anime-inspired art. In the latest collaboration, the captivating charm of James Jean comes to life through festive packaging decorated with three patterned snakes in the midst of shedding their skin to symbolise evolution — a quality that has contributed to what Johnnie Walker is today.
To infuse the collaboration with a touch of Johnnie Walker individuality, James Jean sought inspiration from the intricate layers of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, a remarkable creation meticulously crafted by master blender Emma Walker and her team. Using some of the rarest whiskies from the unparalleled Johnnie Walker reserves of maturing Scotch, Johnnie Walker Blue Label is truly exceptional, brimming with an irresistible burst of hazelnuts, citrus fruit, vanilla and honey.
Also launched to commemorate the Year of the Wood Snake is the John Walker & Sons XR 21 Year Old. Similar to the Blue Label Limited Edition, this festive release also enjoys the magical touch of James Jean, embellished with magnificent motifs that carry positive symbolism. What is more enticing is that the special edition craft comes with 43% ABV, which is more intense and vibrant than the standard XR range. A rare three-stage blending method bestows the XR 21 (matured for 21 years, naturally) with balance and elegance, topped off with a long, warm finish.
